Having been 'forced' to join the French Foreign Legion, the refugee Armengol became Brigade cartographer, but also used his art materials to create a humorous and candid series of watercolour illustrations documenting the life of a legionnaire; in particular the red-haired Catalan who lacked any soldiering skills.
